Encourage Ghanaians To Read - Ashigbey Appeals To Priests

The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged ministers of the Gospel to use their pulpits to encourage Ghanaians, especially the youth, to read. He said poor reading habits had led to the growing lack of enlightenment on the part of Ghanaians and the dwindling fortunes of the newspaper industry. Mr Ashigbey said this when a 13-member group of Roman Catholic priests called on him in his office on Wednesday. The visit enabled the delegation, made up of priests from the southern sector of the country, to be enlightened on the process of newspaper production. They also familiarised themselves with other activities of the company. Collaboration Mr Ashigbey said there were several ways the priests and the GCGL could collaborate for their mutual benefit. He added that there was a global distress in the newspaper industry, hence the need for new strategies to encourage and entice people to read. Share concerns He also encouraged the priests to share their concerns on national issues and write on topics of national importance for publication in the GCGLs newspapers. Mr Ashigbey asked the Catholic Church to hold exchange programmes among their schools so that the students in well-endowed Catholic schools could share ideas with those in deprived areas. He also called for support such as the provision of ICT equipment for those in deprived areas. Mr Ashigbey requested prayers from the priests for the company, saying the company was in difficult times, partly as a result of the difficult economic situation in Ghana. Reverend Father Moses Kaku, who led the delegation, commended the GCGL for the role it was playing in enlightening the public, and asked the management to continue in that direction. He said the decision to visit the GCGL was made at an annual general meeting of the 2000 year group of priests who were ordained in Accra. Rev. Moses Ameveanku, a member of the group, appealed to the GCGL to go beyond the urban areas and report on activities in the rural areas, since people living in the hinterland faced real challenges. The Corporate Affairs Manager of the GCGL, Mr Albert Sam, led the delegation on a tour of the companys facilities.
