With effect from February 2015, trained inspectors would have to approve the work of electrical contractors before the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) is given approval to provide any house with a meter. Mr Solomon Sarpong, a Senior Program Officer of the Technical Regulation Division at the Energy Commission, disclosed this at a meeting of the Commission with the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) in Koforidua He said this year, the Commission would train members of the Electrical Contractors Association in the installation of solar power to be able to install solar panels for private homes. Mr Sarpong pleaded with the contractors to do what is right and not to allow the dictates of their clients to compromise the quality of their work. Mr Victor Owusu, Public Affairs Manager of the Energy Commission, said from February 2015, electrical contractors would have to be certified by the Energy Commission before they could qualify to wire houses in the country. He said that responsibility which used to be handled by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had been revoked, as a way of checking the rampant fire outbreaks in the country. Mr Anokye Abebrese, Eastern Regional Manager of ECG, urged electrical contractors to desist from helping customers of the company in illegal connections, since the practice is a major contributor to the power load-shedding in the country. He appealed to the electrical contractors to help the company to track down people who steal the ECG wires, sell them at cheaper prices, and make the company run at a loss.
