World Red Cross Day Marked

The Red Cross Movement worldwide is marking its anniversary this year on the theme: My Red Cross Story. The Day is to remind volunteers, staff and beneficiaries of their first positive connection to the Movement and re-inspire them to continue their service to the Red Cross Red Crescent. A statement issued by Ghana Red Cross Society and copied to Ghana News Agency on Friday highlighted on the important role played by the Society in areas such as assisting in emergency situations, volunteering and collaborating in Red Cross activities and programmes including First Aid Training. In recognition of these contributions May 8, was set aside each year as World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, to celebrate the power of community and people helping people, both in the spotlight during crises and behind-the-scenes in day-to-day life. The statement said Ghana would mark the years anniversary by a week-long celebration in all the 10 regions , but the focus would be on the Western Region, where an Emergency Response Fund would be launched. It said a massive blood donation exercise is scheduled for Saturday May 10, at the Greater Accra Regional Office, at the Ministries, near the Birth and Death Registry, where scores of Red Cross volunteers would donate blood to support the National Blood Bank. The Ghana Red Cross would also host a presentation of the National Society to Key Stakeholders and Partners in an evening of entertainment and networking dubbed Humanitarian Dinner, at the Kama Conference Centre on Thursday, May 15. The statement explained that the Ghana Red Cross Society is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement which celebrates more than 150 years of humanitarian action worldwide. It said globally, the Red Cross and Red Crescent also help support more than 180 million people every year in community programmes, responding to disasters and inspiring hope among other things. It said: almost everyone has a Red Cross or Red Crescent story and called on the public to join in the celebration and share their Red Cross story with the global community.
