Create New Region Out Of Volta Region

A renewed call has been made for the creation of another region out of the Volta Region in view of the creation of new districts. Earlier in the year, the Volta Regional representative on the Council of State, Torgbui Binah Lawluvi IV, made a similar call for the creation of a new region to speed up the development of the region. The proposed new region is to cover the Buem, Biakoye, Nkwanta -South, Nkwanta-North, Kadjebi, Krachi-East, Krachi- West and Krachi- Nchumuru districts and will help speed up development in the deprived districts in the northern sector of the region. The Amankrado of Bejamse, Nana Odefour Kwabina Wiri II, made the call at a durbar to climax the 24th edition of the Sonkor festival of the people of the Nchumuru Traditional Area in the newly created Krachi-Nchumuru District in the northern part of the Volta Region last Tuesday. The Sonkor festival was celebrated to commemorate the victory of the people in war.It was believed that the ancestral Sonkor god showered its spiritual blessing on the gallant warriors for the victories. According to him, many people in the northern sector were compelled to waste precious man-hours on the banks of the Oti river at Dambai before crossing, coupled with the drudgery of travelling over long distances to access administrative procedures in the south. Compensation to flood victims Nana Wiri appealed to the Minister of Finance to restructure the release and payment of compensation given by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to flooded communities to enhance the effective utilisation of the funds by beneficiary communities. Irrigation project He appealed to the government to revisit the issue of irrigation along the Dakar river, near Zongo-Macheri.He stressed that if that was done, it would increase cultivation of food crops and open up employment avenues for the youth. Utilisation of silos He also called for the utilisation of silos constructed at Chideri, Zongo-Macheri and Borae, adding that although the facilities were crucial for arresting post harvest losses, they had been abandoned from 1972 to date. Landing site Nana Wiri expressed the hope that a landing beach would soon be constructed at Bemjase because it would help empower the people in the area and reduce the hardship of women carrying loads into the vessel. It will also serve as a viable income-generating venture for the district assembly and the community. Proposed development strategy for northern Volta In an address, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Komla Ganyaglo, announced that the government had designed a development strategy for the northern sector of the Volta Region, which includes the construction of two district hospitals at Kpassa in Nkwanta North and Dambai in Krachi-West. He also said two new community senior high schools would be constructed at Chinderi and Damanko, adding that all districts in the northern sector will benefit from the construction of the 200 SHS to be provided by the government. Mr Ganyaglo expressed joy that it was now possible to make a return journey from Ho to Dambai due to the tremendous improvement of the road network between Kpando through Asukawkaw to Dambai. He added that plans were far advanced to award the 50-kilometre link between Dambai and Nkwanta for construction. DCE The Krachi-Nchumuru District Chief Executive, Mr Solomon Kuyon, urged parents to encourage the girl-child to pursue their academic career without any obstruction to enable them attain the peak of their potentials as achieved by the current Volta Regional Minister who is a female. He urged them to uphold the prevailing peace in the area to ensure consistent development. The MP The Member of Parliament (MP) for Krachi-Nchumuru, Mr John Majisi said it was an opportune time for the people to take advantage of educational opportunities that had been brought to their doorsteps unlike in the past when they travelled to very far distances to access education. The District Director of the Ghana Education Service(GES), Mr Steven Twatofi expressed regret that some final-year junior high school pupils had declined to attend free classes aimed at preparing them for the final BECE examinations.
