Education Ministry To Meet Teacher Unions Over Impending Strikes

The Ministry of Education is expected to hold a closed door meeting with the various teacher unions and other stakeholders on Thursday. This follows the strike declaration by some of these unions. The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and The Coalition of Concerned Teachers announced their intended strike which is scheduled to commence on May 15, 2014. The strike is to protest against government over unresolved issues affecting members. Both unions have however suspended their planned demonstration in the Greater Accra Region. According to the chairman of NAGRAT and the National President of The Coalition of Concerned Teachers, the demonstration was suspended because of the ban on noise making by the Ga Traditional Council. They also explained that due to some security reasons which are not meant for public consumption, the demonstration had to be suspended. Members of the two unions in Accra were to embark on a demonstration on Thursday before laying down their tools. The two teacher unions are complaining that government has turned a deaf ear to their plights hence, the need for the industrial action.
