The Ghana Police Service has asked members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to postpone their demonstration, which was scheduled to take place today in Accra and Kumasi.
The police said they were overwhelmed by other security challenges.
A statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police E.A. Asiedu asked NAGRAT to set a new date beyond Monday, 19 May 2014 to hold the demonstration.
Executive members of NAGRAT, at a press conference in Accra yesterday, expressed disappointed with the action of the police.
However, they said, �Since we are lay men in terms of security matters, we agreed to postpone the demonstration until further notice.�
Rene Kwamikorkor Senyo, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, who addressed the media, said even though the demonstration had been cancelled, they would embark on the seven-day strike beginning today.
�We are therefore asking all our members to lay down their tools for the next seven working days. If by the end of May 23, 2014 we have not received any favourable response from government, we would know our next line of action.
Meanwhile, over 250,000 trained teachers, belonging to the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have announced plans to join NAGRAT to embark on the nationwide strike.
The teachers have called on the government to address the non-payment of 2011 and 2012 incremental credit arrears, poor handling of the second-tier pension scheme for Ghana Education Service (GES) and the GES staff rationalization policy, among others.
