Ashanti Region Police CID Expresses Worry Over Bails Granted Hardened Criminals

The Ashanti Regional Office of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service has expressed worry about the way and manner some judges continue to grant hardened criminals such as armed robbers bail. They have therefore appealed to the Chief Justice to do something about the trend as it is making suspected robbers to have a leeway to engage in more criminal activities. Speaking to GBCs Garden City Radio in Kumasi on the recent update of robbery cases, the Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendant Peter Baba explained that robbery cases are not bailable offences, especially where the complaints have established a prima facie case. Chief Superintendant Baba cited some cases in which all the suspects have been released on court bail. According to him, there are many suspected armed robbers who have been granted bail under strange circumstances and Regional CID view these acts by the courts as a great disservice to the fight against crime. Meanwhile, the Police have arrested one Jeff Appiah for attacking and robbing a Pastor and his family at their residence at Dompoase-Kuwait, a suburb of Kumasi. Appiah, together with an accomplice at large, robbed them of three mobile phones, 70 Ghana Cedis and raped the daughter of the Pastor on the 5th of this month. Upon intelligence, Appiah was arrested by the Police three days later at his hideout at Atonsu-Kuwait. Also, Peter Aminga alias Naa Nega has been arrested by the Police at Abuakwa Koforidua. He is believed to be among a group of robbers who operated at Hill Top residential area at Ohwimase Kwadan on the 29th of March this year. A search conducted in his room revealed a black leather jacket which he wore during the robbery on the day, an ATM card, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, two knives, two live ammunition and two hand gloves. Peter Aminga has been remanded in prison custody after appearing before court on Tuesday.
