NADMO Seeks Military Support For Operations

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) will be collaborating with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to rescue victims in the event of disasters or natural occurrences. The Head of the Hydro Meteorological Department of NADMO, Mrs Sarah Adinku, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said the collaboration with the GAF, mainly soldiers from the 48 Engineers Regiment, was part of efforts by NADMO to prepare towards the rainy season. Causes of disaster Mrs Adinku attributed disasters in the country to the improper building materials used in constructing houses, the attitude of the public towards sanitation and the indiscriminate felling of trees. That, she said, had resulted in the numerous floods and destruction of buildings in most parts of the country. Preparedness of NADMO Mrs Adinku said as part of its preparations, NADMO had distributed wireless alert equipment to all regional and district co-ordinators of the organisation across the country to alert the public to how to respond to disasters in their communities. In addition, she said, the team had embarked on a public education to sensitise market women in major areas to the need to dispose of their rubbish in a proper way to prevent disasters. Mrs Adinku said the exercise had gone down well with the public, adding that the education would continue in other regions of the country.
