Pastor Cuts Down Bewitched Tree; Residents Angry

THERE IS uproar and uneasy calm at Ayeboafo in the Akyemansa district of the Eastern region over the cutting down of some trees protecting the community school against wind breaks by the head of the African Faith Tabernacle on grounds that the tree had been bewitched. According to the minister of God, prophet Kwataa, it was revealed to him in a vision after a three-day crusade held on the premises of the school that witches had been feasting on the trees, and they need to be chopped off to lift their spell on the village. After the bizarre incident, the prophet took a sum of GH200.00 from the chief of the area as cost incurred in destroying the rare plant species. A group calling itself concerned youth of Ayeboafo has called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Alhassan, to impress on the Akyemansa district police to bring the man of God to book since he has refused to honour invitation by the police or they would take drastic actions against him. Recounting the incident to the Daily Heritage in an interview, an opinion leader, Daniel Lartey, said the chief of the community informed them sometime ago that the leader of the African Faith Tabernacle wanted to hold a crusade on the premises of the school, which they accordingly assented to Unfortunately, after the three day crusade, the pastor claimed that he had had a vision from God that the trees serving as wind breaks for the school building had been possessed by witchcraft thus, they need to be chopped down, he added. He said the community has issued an ultimatum to the pastor to report himself to the police, or they would drag him out of his church to produce the trees. The P.T.A. chairman of the school, Samuel Nartey, charged that he is prepared to go all length to drag the pastor to court to explain his actions but, most importantly to pay for any damages if the winds should take away any of the roofs of the building.
