President Directs Finance Ministry To Immediately Release Funds For Conti Project Agreement

President John Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to immediately release funds for the Conti Project agreement which is an integrated project to tackle flooding in Accra. President Mahama who gave the directive during snap visits to flooded areas in Accra also bemoaned the bad attitude of Ghanaians throwing garbage into gutters. He noted that the behaviour is a major cause of flooding and the fact that human lives are lost as a result is unacceptable. The President was accompanied by the AMA Chief Executive, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije and the NADMO Coordinator, Kofi Portuphy. He visited Mallam and South Odorkor. Meanwhile, two persons have been confirmed dead with three others injured following Thursdays flooding in Accra. NADMO Coordinator, Kofi Portuphy who disclosed this to Radio Ghana, blamed engineering defects for the floods. He told Radio Ghanas correspondent that the annual ritual of flooding must stop. Its been two years three months since government signed a memorandum of Understanding with the US group, Conti Engineering in Washington DC for the construction of storm drains, water retention reservoirs, desilting of the Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon to address the perennial flooding of Accra. Though Parliament has approved the project estimated at $ 600 million, AMA Chief Executive, Alfred Vanderpuije is not a happy man. He told Radio Ghana that the Ministry of Finance is delaying the release of funds for the project to take off.
