ICU Calls For A Restructured AU

The General Secretary of Industrial and Commercial Workers Union of Trade Union Congress, has suggested the need for African Union (AU) to raise its status to solve mounting challenges such as economics and conflicts. Mr Solomon A. Kotei said if each head of state continue to cling to his or her sovereign independent country it would be difficult for the AU to effectively bring such problems under control. He also expressed the need for Africa to have a common currency and lingual franca. Speaking to Ghana News Agency on the relevance of the AU in an interview in Accra at the weekend, he said the AU must be able to manage its endowed resources and add value to them in order to have comparative advantage. He said no one could underrate the relevance of AU, although the body is moving at a slow pace. As part of efforts to restructure the AU, Mr Kotei said an executive president should head the pan-African union to facilitate the building of the needed structures that would lead Africa to more economic growth.
