No Show At Kombian Trial

The trial of Johnson Kombian, the notorious armed robber and a convicted jail breaker for the murder of two police officers at an Accra Fast Track High Court was yesterday adjourned. This was after George Assamaney, counsel for the suspect, sent information to the court that he was indisposed and could not make it to court. An investigator with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Hanson Gove, gave evidence at the last hearing and was supposed to be cross-examined by counsel for Kombian. A cheerful Kombian walked back from the dock to join his fellow prisoners after the case was adjourned. Marina Appiah, the principal state attorney, was in court with the witness. The trial judge, Justice Mustapha Habib Logoh, consequently had the case adjourned to June 17, 2014. The investigator told the court at the last hearing that Kombian had told police that he had no idea about the shooting incident that led to the death of Lance Cpls Owusu Frimpong, Prince Agyare and the shooting of the sole survivor of the attack, Cpl Osei Frimpong, at Napkanduri Scarp in the Northern Region. According to him, Kombian had told police in his cautioned statement that I did not know that two policemen had been killed. He said the suspect rather stated in his statement that some police officers in their area came and arrested some young men and afterwards some houses including his were burnt to the ground so he, his wife and children had nowhere to lay their heads. The witness said Kombian stated that he went to look for a place for his family to lay their heads and it was when he was returning that he was arrested by the police. The investigator noted that he was assigned to go and investigate the matter so he went to Napkanduri to the scene of the crime and the last duty post of the police officers where measurements and pictures were taken. He also saw the motorbike used by the police officers before their untimely death.
