For allegedly possessing $2,100 fake United States dollars, Sulemana Awut, a Cameroonian, has been refused bail and remanded in police custody by the Amasaman Circuit Court in Accra. According to the prosecutor, District Superintendent of Police Patrick Morkeh, Awut admitted the offence in his caution statement and indicated that he kept the fake currency in his pocket as a source of inspiration. Awut is to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Samuel Boakye-Yiadom, on June 19. According to DSP Morkeh the complainant, Ishmeal Allotey, is a computer technician living at Abensu near Pokuase while Awut is an artist and a resident of Tudu in Accra. DSP Morkeh said in 2012, one Amidu met Allotey and they became friends. Amidu then borrowed GH�7,000.00 from Allotey and promised to pay back later. The prosecutor said Amidu failed to pay back the amount and could not be traced by Allotey. DSP Morkeh said in April this year, Amidu conspired with Awut to lure Allotey into a fake currency note business and gave Allotey a contact number to call. The prosecutor stated that on April 14, Awut sent a message to Allotey scheduling a meeting at Pokuase. On May 30, Awut met Allotey at Pokuase and discussed the currency business, urging Allotey to join him. According to the prosecutor, Allotey feigned interest in the business and thereafter alerted the police. On the same day, Allotey led the police to arrest Awut and when searched, $2,100 in $100 denominations suspected to be fake currencies, were found in his pocket.
