Ex-Fire Service Woman Dupes Businesswoman

An ex-Fire Service personnel has been remanded into prison custody by an Accra Circuit Court for making away with household items and clothing worth GH15,904 belonging to a beautician, under the pretext of selling them for her. Gifty Azumah convinced the complainant that if she gives her household appliances worth GH3,928 and clothing worth GH11,976, she could distribute them to her own customers, and later bring the money back. Gifty Amuzu, after collecting the items, went into hiding. She was finally arrested by the police, after an informant had feigned interest in her line of work. Upon her arrest, she admitted the offence, and stated that she had already used the proceeds of the items sold for her own personal project. She was afterwards arraigned before the court, where she pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of fictitious trading, contrary to section 135 of act 29/1960, before the presiding judge, Mr. Essandoh. Her explanation to the court was an admission of guilt, so she was found guilty by the court. Her sentence has been deferred to today. The facts of the case are that in December 2012, Gifty Amuzu visited the complainants saloon at Mamprobi, a suburb of Accra, to have her hair done. According to the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Tassan, in the course of a conversation with the complainant, Gifty Amuzu got to know that the complainant travels abroad to bring in household appliances and clothing for sale. He said Gifty Amuzu, therefore, convinced the complainant that she could sell her goods for her within a very short period. Within a space of two weeks, Gifty Amuzu had collected household appliances valued GH3,928, and clothing valued at GH11,976, bringing the total to GH15,904, under the pretext of distributing them to her customers, and return the money the Prosecutor stated. Chief Inspector Tassan mentioned that Gifty Amuzu went into hiding after collecting the items, and all efforts to trace her proved futile. According to him, Giftys phone number was given to an informant, who lured her with call credits and other business deals. According to him, on June 7, 2014, the accused was finally lured to a spot at Nungua, a suburb of Accra, where she was arrested by the Mamprobi police.
