National Chief Imam Supports Road Safety Campaign

Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam, has declared his support for the latest road safety campaign being undertaken by National Road Safety Commission (NRSC). The National Chief Imam made the pledge when officials of the NRSC paid a courtesy call on him at his residence in Accra to announce a new road safety campaign dubbed: Passengers, Speak Up! Dont Get Killed on the road. He expressed concern about the rate at which many lives are being lost as a result of road accidents and called on Ghanaians to observe traffic regulations. He promised to liaise with the Chief Imams in the regions and districts, as part of measures to propagate the campaign. Road Safety issues concern everybody as we are all at risk and I will urge every Muslim as well as non-Muslims to observe basic road safety tips and prevent the deaths being recorded as a result of road accidents, he said. Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, Executive Director of NRSC, commended the National Chief Imam for accepting to champion the new road safety campaign, which is intended to empower the passenger. She said religion has no barrier and could be used to reduce road accidents. Mrs Obiri-Yeboah complained about the rate at which commercial motor riders popularly known as Okada riders continue to operate in the country, even though their activities are illegal, as well as the refusal by some heavy duty truck drivers to patronise reflective tapes for their vehicles. She, therefore, urged the National Chief Imam to help educate the public, especially as Muslims have embarked on the Ramadan.
