Be More Innovative - Prisons Boss Tells Staff

The Controller-General of Prisons, Ms Matilda Baffour-Awuah, has entreated prison officers to generate more innovative ideas to support the Prison Service and make sacrifices at helping the Service succeed in its mandate of rehabilitating and reforming young offenders in their custody. She said this during a durbar with officers and men at the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC) at Maamobi in Accra when she paid a working visit. She added that with the types of industrial equipment placed at their disposal, she expects more creativity and innovation that the Service can market to generate income to support governmental efforts, and also train the juveniles in same. The Controller-General advised the officers to exhibit the best of behaviours, so as to positively mentor the young offenders under their care to make them turn over a new leaf and get back to society as better persons. Let us come together and create a positive image for the Service, she added. Madam Baffour-Awuah noted that the British High Commission is ready to offer the Service the necessary assistance to make it develop its industry, so officers should best position themselves to justify the assistance as they equip the juveniles with marketable trades. This, she believes, would enable them create a sustainable job to support themselves and their parents when they are released into society. She inspected the carpentry, tailoring, mechanics, pottery, jewellery and basketry shops to acquaint herself with artisanal developments.
