A man and his girlfriend have been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old boy to death and secretly burying him at a waste dumping site. The lovers, Michael Kweku Obeng, 27, unemployed, and Comfort Tene Abunbero, 29, trader were arrested at Dome last Thursday following a report by the grandmother of the eight-year-old boy. Grandmother The Achimota Mile Seven District Police Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Henry Agbeve, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that on July 1, 2014, Juliana Abunbero filed a complaint that she was suspicious about the circumstances surrounding her grandsons death and wanted the police to investigate it. According to the police, Madam Abunbero said in her statement that she was living with her grandson, Robert Abunbero, at Naaga in the Upper East Region when, in May 2014, her daughter, Comfort, requested that the child be sent to Accra. She said her daughter, who is the boys mother, had explained that she wanted the child to further his education in Accra. However, a month later, she (the grandmother) received a telephone call from Comfort that her boy had died and been buried without the grandmothers notice. Boy was sick When the police commenced investigations into the matter, Comfort and her boyfriend informed them that the boy had been ill. They are said to have told the police that the boy had a protruding stomach, started vomiting and died while he was being sent to hospital. The lovers claimed they sent the dead body to a church, and after prayers had been said for it, they decided to bury him at an abandoned dump site near their home and covered it with waste to conceal the burial ground. Mr Agbeve said the two suspects were subsequently arrested on July 3, 2014. Blame game He said as part of investigations, the suspects led the police to the site where the boy had been buried. While at the scene, they started blaming each other for beating the child to death, he said. He said during interrogations, Comfort had hinted that the boy had on one occasion attempted to have sex with her, for which reason they beat him. The body of the child is yet to be exhumed as investigations continue.
