KMA Presiding Member To Be Investigated

The Ashanti Regional office of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) is to commence criminal investigations of the Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kofi Senya, for allegedly arrogating parcels of land belonging to the assembly at the Suame Electoral Area to himself to build stalls without recourse to the assembly. He is alleged to have built 18 stalls and rented them out to traders with what the BNI described as unconventional agreements. A document from the KMA to the BNI, a copy of which the Daily Graphic has, indicates that in some cases the Presiding Member allegedly entered into the agreement with the traders and signed them as a witness at the same time. A source at the BNI office told the Daily Graphic that the action by the BNI was in response to a report submitted to the KMA Chief Executive, Mr Kojo Bonsu, by the affected traders on May 21, this year. At a May 21, 2014 press conference in Kumasi, the traders made a number of allegations against Mr Senya, including the fact that he had taken over a parcel of land said to belong to a widow, Amina. The Presiding Member declined to comment on the issues when contacted by the Daily Graphic on phone. Among the issues the BNI said it would be investigating is the allegation that Mr Senya sold governments free fertilizer to farmers four years ago.
