Pool Of water Impedes Flow Of Traffic

A large pool of water underneath the overhead bridge at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle is hindering the free movement of vehicles and poses a threat to human life. Drivers who ply the road from the Ako Adjei Interchange to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle have no choice but to drive through the puddle of muddy water that covers a large section of the road. There is very little room under the circumstances for the drivers to manoeuvre their way successfully and this often results in heavy vehicular traffic on that stretch of road. The situation is further worsened by some drivers who, in their quest to escape the heavy traffic, drive on the pedestrian walkway. This puts the lives of pedestrians at risk as there is the likelihood that they could be knocked down by a vehicle. In an interview with the Daily Graphic, some drivers said they had no choice but to use the pedestrian walkway because it was possible that their vehicles may get stuck in the pool of water. According to them, though the pedestrian walkway was not meant for vehicles, it was the only way that could assure them of safe passage. Pool of water The muddy water stretches from the traffic light near the Abena Ateaa Tower to the Fraga Oil filling station near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. The large pool of water has been there since the heavy rainfall that led to flooding in many parts of Accra about two weeks ago. According to some traders in the vicinity, the puddle had remained for a lomg time because there were no channels for the water to flow into the drains. The Daily Graphic observed that gutters under the overhead bridge were too small to carry large volumes of water, especially during a downpour. The situation was further compounded by the indiscriminate dumping of waste into the gutter by the public, with the result that water can no longer flow freely. Deplorable road Already, there are huge potholes on the road, making its use an unpleasant experience for drivers and the continued existence of the puddle is likely to worsen the situation. With the rains set to continue, the pool is expected to increase in volume, which will lead to more vehicular traffic on a daily basis.
