Litigant NPP Activist Wants Court To Stop Party's Presidential Primaries

On Thursday, 24th July, 2014, the 2012 Presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo and his competitors Alan Kyeremanten, Addai Nimo and Konadu Apraku faced the vetting committee. The exercise ended today after Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Joe Ghartey and Osei Ameyaw have had the opportunity to be vetted. In all, seven flagbearer aspirants were vetted. And as part of measures to cut down the number of aspirants to five, a Super Delegates Congress would be held by the party on August 31st, 2014. A final report is yet to be submitted to the partys Steering Committee to take a final decision and this was confirmed by Mr. Peter Mac Manu, a member of the Vetting Committee. But a card bearing member of the party by name David Hoezame, has filed a suit against the party and its chairman at the High Court seeking an interlocutory injunction on the party. Peacefmonline.com has in its possession, copies of the writ he filed. In the said document, David Hoezame is asking the court to restrain the National Council and Vetting Committee from vetting presidential aspirants. He also wants to see the court restrain the party from organizing a Special Delegate s conference. Lastly, the former Chairman of the Central Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region is also asking the court to compel the party to put a hold to the organisation of the presidential primaries slated for October 18, 2014. Just last month, David Hoezame was in court to protest the regional elections conducted by the party. He claimed the elections were hurriedly organised. After amending his writ, he has now asked the court to restrain the party from proceeding with the Special Delegates Congress. His major concern is with the composition of the partys National Council to oversee over the vetting, Special Delegates Congress and the presidential primaries. He opinions that it was wrongly constituted and is illegal. In an affidavit filed by lawyers of Hoezame, the plaintiff insists that on 16 July, 2014 the illegally constituted National Council violated the party's constitution by scheduling 18th October, 2014 as date for the election of the party's presidential candidates. "The behavior of the defendants has put the entire New Patriotic Party into disarray." "If the Status quo is not restored within the New Patriotic Party, the party will disintegrate and the Republic of Ghana may suffer for want of a viable alternative to the ruling party towards national development." "If that happens, I will not have done my duty as a member of the New Patriotic Party..." the affidavits held. On Tuesday August 12, 2014, the case is expected to be heard.
