Keta Port Project In Limbo

The President of the Volta Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Dumega Raymond Okudzeto, has hinted of the organisations intention to pull out of the Keta New Port Development Project. He said it would do so together with its investor partners, DY Engineering Company of South Korea. The intent is because of the unwillingness of government officials to make the project a reality, Dumega Okudzeto said in Accra. Keta Port The final report of a feasibility study for the proposed Keta New Port Development Project in the Volta Region was presented to officials of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in Tema in 2012. The project, which was expected to cost $500 million under a public-private partnership (PPP), was initiated by the Volta Foundation with DY Engineering Company as the main contractors. The proposed project would complement the eastern corridor road that links the southern parts of Ghana to the regions in the north of the country. If the project is realised, it is expected to also ease pressure on both the Tema and Takoradi ports. Job creation Okudzeto said the project would in addition create jobs for many unemployed youth in the Volta Region. It was estimated that more than 30,000 jobs will be created during the construction of the port, including an additional 100,000 jobs in hotels that will also spring up alongside, he said. He said designs for the construction of a sports stadium which was to be funded by Chinese investors had also been completed but support from the government was lacking. Okudzeto appealed to the government, especially those officials who hailed from the region, to help in the efforts to develop the Keta sea port.
