A sod-cutting ceremony for the commencement of works on a 120-bed hospital for the Adansi North District in the Ashanti Region has been performed at Fomena, the capital of the district.
The facility will augment existing health facilities in the district and consequently increase access to quality health care.
The project is part of a plan to build six district hospitals in the country at a total cost of $175 million.
The contract for the project, which would span a period of five years, has been signed by the Ministry of Health and NMS Infrastructure Limited (Ltd), a British project management consortium.
Beneficiary districts
The five other districts to benefit from the facility include Kumawu in the Ashanti, Sekondi in the Western, Abetifi in the Eastern, Garu Tempane in the Upper East and Dodowa in the Greater Accra regions.
According to the Programme Director of NMS Infrastructure Ltd, Mr Peter Mark, the Adansi North District hospital will have 26 wards and departments, two operating theatres, a recovery unit, an intensive care unit (ICU), a surgical ward for both males and females, a medical ward, male and female accident and emergency wards and an observation and out-patient department (OPD).
Other facilities will include a maternity, obstetrics & gynaecology ward, laboratory, mortuary, paediatric ward and a radiology unit.
He said the soon-to-be-built hospital would also have a 42-unit staff accommodation quarters.
Mr Peter Mark said his outfit was proud to contribute to the strategy put in place by the government to meet the Millennium Development Goals and make health care at the district level a priority.
He said all the hospitals would have modern healthcare equipment and facilities carefully designed for the African and tropical environment
Gratitude
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, commended the Adansi Traditional Council for releasing a 35-acre land for the project.
He noted that the facility had come at the right time, since every country�s success depended largely on the health of its people.
He expressed the hope that the hospital would enhance quality healthcare delivery in the area
Support for project
The District Chief Executive for the area, Alhaji Abdul Lateef Majdoub, assured the NMS Infrastructure Ltd of support from the district assembly and the traditional council.
The Omanhene of the Adansi Traditional Area, Nana Bonsra Afriyie II, was grateful to the government for including the Adansi North District in the beneficiary communities.
He further urged the contractor to employ many of the youth in the area to execute the project.
