More than 3000 streets in Accra have been assigned names. The exercise falls under the Street Naming and Property Addressing System (SNPAS), a project initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development aimed at bringing about improvement in urban planning and management.
In Accra, the urgency to complete the exercise is to meet the September 2014 deadline for all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to finish the work, as well as a directive from President John Mahama asking MMDAs to speed up the process.
The street naming exercise was supervised by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). When completed, the SNPAS will ensure easy identification of physical properties and also provide an avenue for effective mobilisation and collection of revenue.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Nuumo Blafo said the AMA had already finished naming streets in the Ayawaso East, West and Central sub-metros.
He said the project would help MMDAs to monitor public assets and also bring about improvement in directing the location of people and services within the city.
�Many people at times found it difficult locating, streets and ended up getting lost.
�The names of the streets were done in collaboration with chiefs and members of the communities, as well as various interest groups,� he said.
He said besides the names indicating the communities one was in, the streets were also named after people who had contributed to the development of the communities.
