Gov't To Meet UTAG Thursday

Government is scheduled to meet with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) over their on-going strike action on Thursday, 28th August 2014 at 3:00pm. The meeting is expected to persuade the lecturers to call off their strike. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister in charge of Tertiary Education in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi hinted that government after reaching an agreement with the Polytechnic Association of Ghana (POTAG) will try to also find a common ground with UTAG. POTAG and UTAG went on strike following the refusal of government to pay their research and book allowance. After almost four months, POTAG finally reached an agreement with government at a meeting held on Tuesday and they called off their strike. However, UTAG is yet to call of theirs. According to the Deputy Minister, government intended to meet with the two bodies; POTAG and UTAG on Tuesday. However, UTAG could not make it to the meeting. He said government on Wednesday, sent a letter to UTAG inviting them to the meeting on Thursday and we hope that they will honour our invitation We wanted to address this matter with the two unions but UTAG were not able to make it. We now have to engage UTAG separately. We will meet with Vice Chancellors-Ghana, tomorrow at 12:00pm and then we will meet the executives of UTAG at 3:00pm in an effort to ensure that the Universities will reopen, he stated.
