Members of Parliament (MPs) are currently struggling to perform some key duties outside the august House � which are critically needed to help better the lives of their constituents.
This situation has cropped up because the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has failed to pay their Common Fund for almost one year now.
MP for Kwadaso in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who made the announcement, bemoaned the non-payment of the Fund, which he claimed was hampering the performance of MPs.
According to him, MPs rely heavily on the Common Fund to assist people in their constituencies, including brilliant but needy students.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who looked solemn as he addressed a section of the media in Kumasi, said the government�s decision not to pay the MPs Common Fund for almost a year, was becoming too much for them to bear.
He made the observations when he presented scholarship package worth a whopping GH�35,350 to 95 brilliant but needy students in his constituency on Tuesday.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto is noted for his passion for the development of education in his constituency. He had presented similar scholarship packages worth GH�35,180 to 99 other needy but brilliant students in his constituency since he became MP six years ago.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto said the beneficiaries of the scheme were drawn from the senior high schools, universities, polytechnics, nursing training schools and other tertiary institutions.
He said about 700 students applied for the scholarship scheme this year, noting that the high application was a clear indication that Ghanaians are facing real hardships.
He revealed that he secured funding for this year�s scholarship scheme from the Social Investment Fund (SIF), formerly HIPC Fund.
The MP announced that he had secured support for the Womasi Clinic which had become a white elephant, to be furnished, adding that he would soon present 200 desks and chairs to the Kwadaso SDA School.
