The Northern Region office of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) is to roll out a project later this year to improve water supply to communities in the region.
The project dubbed: SMATerWASH, would be implemented in all the 26 districts of the region to scale up residents� access to potable water.
Mr Godwin Kotoku, Extension Services Specialist at the Northern Regional Office of the CWSA, said this at the seventh Regional Alliance Meeting of stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector in the Region.
The meeting, attended by civil society organizations engaged in WASH activities in the region, was to assess the findings of the third round of functionality and service monitoring of water facilities in the East Gonja District, which formed part of the Ghana Triple-S Initiative.
This pilot project (Ghana Triple-S Initiative) studied the water situation in the district and came out with water facilities that could last forever, as well as providing good quality water for the residents.
Currently about 61 per cent of residents in the region have access to potable water but whiles water coverage in some districts is about 90 per cent, others are around 26 per cent.
Mr Kotoku said the project would succeed the pilot project on water access and functionality at East Gonja District of the region, which ended in June this year.
He said increased water supply to resident would help the country to attain the millennium development goals on health and sanitation.
Mr Bashiru Shahadu, Esat Gonja District Water and Sanitation Team Leader, said about 31 per cent of residents of the district now had access to potable water.
Mr Shahadu said the district had also increased its budgetary allocation for the water sector by increasing it from 60,000 dollars in 2012 to 138,000 dollars in 2013 to ensure that more people had access to water.
