Looming Harmattan Threatens Senchi Ferry Operations

Project Manager of the Senchi Ferry Site, Mr. Benjamin Adjei-Keelson, has cautioned that operations of the pontoons will continue to be distracted by the low water levels caused by the non-flow of water from the Akosombo and Akuse Dams, due to ongoing maintenance works by the Volta River Authority. He said the low water levels had slowed operations for the past two months and that the situation can lead to serious problems, especially as we draw closer to the festive season. As it stands, management will not be able to tell when the water level of the Volta Lake will rise to enable the ferries to be operated efficiently. We dont depend on rainfall for our operations, but the Volta Lake is regulated by the operations of the Volta River Authority at Akuse and Akosombo. Currently, the water level is low because the aVRA is conducting some maintenance works at the Akosombo and Akuse stations, which has caused them to reduce water supply for our operations. Mr. Keelson, said management has not received any notification from the VRA as to when the water level will be restored to enable them operate at their maximum capacity, and there is cause for alarm, especially, as we draw closer to Christmas. They have also not given us any indication as to when they can supply us with enough water to operate with. The problem here is that Christmas is fast-approaching, and if the problem is not solved we will face a serious problem during the festive season. He said the ferries have been experiencing many challenges, including constant breakdown and destruction of parts due to the low level of the water. He said the loading capacities of the ferries have been reduced from 18 vehicles to 9 vehicles because of the low water levels.
