Squatters seize Adentan Housing

Squatters Are gradually invading the Adentan Housing community, a well planned residential area in Accra, with illegal structures without building permits. Information gathered by the DAILY HERITAGE indicates that, even though the Adentan Municipal Assembly is aware of the situation, they have not taken any steps to stop the illegal residents before it gets out of hand. A visit to the community revealed that, there is a fast developing slum in the municipality with wooden structures (kiosks) being used to decorate the area with no regard to proper town and country planning. When some of the squatters were interviewed, they disclosed that the Assembly has given its consent to their activities; hence, no amount of demolition threat could deter them from erecting more structures. During the visit to the site, it was also noticed that warning signs had been written on the walls and the structures but the residents turned deaf ear to them. A contractor working on one of the structures indicated that their area is not the only place where such structures are being constructed without permit and that; there are other areas where people have been allowed to build without permits. Is this the only place buildings are being put up along storm drains? he queried the reporter. But some residents of the Adentan Housing, in an interview with the paper expressed disappointment at the development. The Municipal Chief Executive Benjamin Angenu, in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE explained that the issue of squatters was not only in the Adentan Housing area, but the assembly was tackling the issue in phases. Mr. Angenu explained that the problem existed for years before he took office some a months ago; however, the clearing of squatters was part of the assemblys plans to sanitize the area hence all squatters will be cleared over a period of time. According to him, resources were being mobilized to get heavy duty equipment to help clear all squatters within the municipality. He further noted that his outfit had not given any individual(s) permit(s) to build illegal structures and therefore urged the legal residents to exercise restraint for the assembly to work in phases and clear all squatters.
