Court Stops Eastern Region NDC Elections

The Koforidua high court has placed an injunction on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regional congress scheduled for this week. The plaintiffs, Mathew Kwadwo Antwi and Nana Yaw Banahene, both branch chairmen in the Akropong constituency, averred that the regional executives had failed to declare the winner for the chairmanship race in the constituency over two months now since the election was held at Mamfe-Akuapem. The plaintiffs accused the regional secretary and the acting regional chairman, Anthony Gyampo and Alhaji Sumaila respectively, of disrespecting the franchise of the delegates by not declaring Daniel Offei winner. According to the plaintiffs, the delegates voted massively for Mr. Offei as the constituency chairman. They argued that the regional executives had failed to heed to the directives of the General Secretary of the Party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, that Mr. Offei be declared winner and subsequently sworn in. DAILY GUIDE gathered that one Mr. Afful, when informed about the directives by the General Secretary, quickly rushed to court and placed an injunction on the declaration. The case was withdrawn from court for amicable settlement by the regional executives, but they could not resolve the impasse hence, the current injunction. However, the plaintiffs are praying the court to ensure that the chairmanship results are declared, and all the executives in the Akropong constituency are sworn into office before the regional congress is held.
