NSA Clears The Air Of Privatization Of Facilities

Mr. Joe Kpenge - Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has said the decision to go into Public Private Partnership (PPP) on the facilities of the NSA was to give them a face-lift and not to sell them off. Addressing a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Kpenge said the move was not meant to sell facilities of the NSA as being perceived, but rather to enhance revenue generation capacity of the NSA. He said the decision will help cater for facilities at the Accra Sports Stadium, the National Hockey Stadium and the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Mr. Kpenge, said his outfit will be looking at football pitches, artificial turf at the hockey pitch, tennis courts, office spaces, hostel, stores, car parks and the open spaces as possible areas of the partnership. According to him, prospective partners will be expected to use modern methods of technology to maximize the use of the facilities and also inject capital to get the needed funds for development. He said though the NSA had been raising money from the Internal Generated Fund (IGF), their share of the cake will not be able to take care of their needs, hence the need to enter into private partnership. The NSA was receiving 15% of gate proceeds of national team matches but has been increased to 20% while the remaining 80% goes to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS). The NSA retains only 40% from hiring of the stadium while the remaining goes to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS). Mr. Kpenge said, the move will not hinder the development of sports in the country saying this will be a negotiated effort and will give room for proper planning and efficiency on the part of the Sports Associations.
