Stop Fighting Or Face Governments Firepower Veep Warns Alavanyo, Nkonya

The Vice-President has warned perpetrators in the Alanvanyo and Nkonya violence to immediately stop fighting or face governments action, warning that the State has more firepower than both sides. Alavanyo and Nkonya have been involved in a bloody conflict over a disputed land for decades. The violence in the two communities has persisted for years despite several attempts by government, religious leaders and other groups to resolve the violence peacefully. In December last year, there were renewed clashes following gunshots that left one person dead. There has since been sporadic gunfire across both communities. But the government appears to have run out of patience with both sides in the conflict. Speaking in the Volta Region, where he met the chiefs and people over the endless violence, Vice-President Amissah-Arthur said some people were working to ensure that the violence continues for monetary benefit. He stressed, however, that the interest of the few should not be allow to override that of the larger population. The Vice-President said the violence needed to be brought to an end so that we can make progress as a people. Civil wars, civil conflicts cannot have a winner in a modern Nation-State. The State cannot allow one set of people to subdue another set through the force of arms because we have more arms than you have and if the IGP were minded to, he could destroy the whole area, so we cannot seek victory in a conflict in a community, he warned.
