Customizing number plates is becoming a hot trend in Ghana these days, with online media, television programmes and newspapers picking up on the public interest.

The aforementioned media groups even issues a regular magazines dedicated entirely to number plates, containing exclusive interviews with Ghanaian celebrities such as Funnyface, Jackie Appiah, Kafui Danku, Nadia Buari, Dblack, Sandra Ankobiah, Okyeame Kwame (whose license plate reads ‘RAP DR 1 Z’), Amakye Dede (SERIOUS 1 – 11), and Shatta Wale (Shatta 1-15) in addition to many others.

With news of the growth of license plate customization reaching the mainstream media, the public interest and curiosity in license plate customization mania have grown massively. Ghana’s most trusted auto market, Carmudi.com.gh, has reported that customers call them frequently to ask how one can have their number plates personalized.

Ghanaian celebrities and personalities are using this new fashion as another way of showing their presence and power in society and also as a way of surprising loved ones on their birthdays or anniversaries, by using the person’s initials and/or year of birth in the plate’s number.

Auto Mall Ghana, a privately owned car distributor and the exclusive West African retailer of the Toyota Land Cruiser Black Bison Special Edition (pictured) maintains the vast majority of the buyers of this exclusive car are requesting customized license plates. One the the models pictured was purchased by a gentleman for his wife on her 50th birthday, and the license plate reads HB 1964-14. How much more romantic can a man be?
