The Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) has asked the Police service to tackle the culture of extortion in the Police Service.
It further asked the law enforcement body to deal with police officers who extort money from commercial drivers.
Eleven truck drivers were reportedly asked to pay 2 cedis to some police officers around Laura Nandom in the Upper West Region.
Reports also indicate that some commercial drivers who ply the Ghana’s trade corridors, especially the Tema-Ouagadougou route are frequently asked to pay bribes to police officers.
Speaking to Citi Business News, the Marketing Affairs Manager of GPHA asked the Police Service to put in place measures to deal with the corrupt officials.
“The IGP will have to bring these men on these roads to order because the economic objective of this country is to make our country a gateway for trade and investment in the sub region.”
According to him, such practices should also be discouraged since it hinders the freedom of movement as guaranteed under the ECOWAS protocol on the free movement of persons and under Article 21 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
