With the entry of Indian manufacturing companies into special industrial enclaves as that on Prampram, near Greater Accra, a conglomerate of companies is set to soon commence industrial operations in the country.
The Indian Envoy to Ghana, Mr Jeeva Sagar has recently expressed satisfaction over his country’s willingness to assist Ghana grow her economy and improve the lives of Ghanaians, especially the youth.
India, he affirmed will continue to provide assistance in existing fields of collaboration and invest in projects that will among others create jobs for the teeming youth in the country, the Envoy has reiterated.
Mr Sagar made the remarks during a brief flag-hoisting ceremony held in Accra last Monday to mark India’s 66th Republic Day.
The occasion pooled members of the Indian community in Ghana to the India House (Residence of the Envoy) to listen to the address of their President.
Mr Sagar made reference to the inauguration of an Indian meter manufacturing plant at Ningo-Prampram late last year, an establishment which he was happy had paved the way for other industrial enterprises to begin industrial operations.
“It is an industrial zone of more than 200 acres developed by an Indian investor but most interestingly there are companies from Brazil, Spain and other countries springing up on that same industrial space,” he recalled.
The High Commissioner pointed out that the electronic meter plant owned by Alpha Power Ventures Limited, an Indian company, used barely 90 days to start manufacturing from the scratch because the entire zone had already been developed by another Indian investor.
The Envoy was confident that the impact of the project on the Ghanaian economy will be tremendous.
“We will have value addition, we will have employment generation here and a lot more,” he added.
The $10-million plant is expected to create between 200 and 300 new jobs, with the number estimated to hit 1,000 when additional capacity is brought on stream.
Earlier on, after hoisting the flag of the third largest economy in the world, Mr Sagar read out the address of the President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee which called on Indian nationals all over the world to emulate the life and example of Mahatma Gandhi who was creative and selfless in his dealings with people.
“We must be creative people, nourished by innumerable, interlinked rivers of ideas. Our youth must lead the way to mastery of technology and communication in a universe where the cloud has become a library without frontiers, and vast opportunity awaits within the computer in your palm. The 21st Century is within India’s grasp,” he admonished.
