District League Table launched for Brong-Ahafo

The District League Table is not intended to ‘name or shame’ any District but to support government better understand and monitor development across the country.

It is also to support citizens’ access to information and knowledge on their rights and responsibilities towards development in their Metropolitan, Municipalities and Districts.

Nana Hagan, Resource Mobilisation and Public Affairs Director, for the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) said at the Brong-Ahafo Regional launch of the 2014 DLT rankings of the Region, on Wednesday in Sunyani.

The DLT project, the first in Ghana, seeks to assess, compare and measure the levels of development of all the 216 Districts in the country in the provision and delivery of key public services. It also forms part of collective efforts to promote social accountability through active citizens’ participation through the local governance and development.

The regional launch, therefore, aimed at bringing close to the doorsteps of the respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and other stakeholders at the district level, the findings of the DLT, and to enable all stakeholders to familiarize themselves better with objectives, processes and outcomes of the project.

The launch also provided space for the top MMDAs in the Region to share their best practices, and for the low ranked ones to bring out the challenges they were facing to seek the support of government and development partners.

Nana Hagan said the project, a joint initiative between CDD-Ghana and UNICEF-Ghana, was to support and deepen social accountability in the country to generate governmental responsiveness in the country, both at the national and local levels.

He said besides other objectives, the regional launch created the platform for partnerships with the media, civil society and community-based organizations in the districts and regions to stimulate dialogue on how best citizens and duty bearers could cooperate towards enhanced public goods and services delivery.

Nana Hagan said the districts were ranked in terms of their deliveries across six key public service sectors, comprising health, governance, education, security, sanitation and water.

Tano South District ranked first, both at the regional and national levels, whilst Sene East was last in the Region for 2014.
