Acquisition Of Land For Millennium City School Family Chase Mayor

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has been accused of failing to pay adequate compensation to the Nanka Bruce Family, that legitimately own a parcel of land on which a Millennium City Schools is being built on at Korle Gonno in the Greater Accra Region.

The family has thus threatened a legal suit against the Assembly should it fails to pay adequate compensation them.

Information reaching The New Crusading GUIDE indicates  that although the Accra Metropolitan Planning Committee in 2003, requested for re-entry into Naka Bruce school site after the school has been absorbed into the public school system, the Assembly has since failed to pay the required compensation to the family.

However, the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) led a team of officials to cut a sod and begun the construction of one of its Millennium City schools on the said land.

This paper has established that, in 1956, when the Nanka Bruce schools absorbed into the public school system by the then Accra Municipal Council, the family since September 1953 has been demanding without success for the payment of compensation and ground rent.

However, according to information, the Accra City Council in 1989 decided that part of the land should be rezoned and released to the family to build residential house as result of persistent demand by the family for the site.

But, the Metro Education Unit of the AMA could not regularize its title to the site as it remained educational, hence the family wrote to the Accra Planning Committee to rezone the remaining educational site since the school has been relocated to a new site and the site vacant.

The family also indicated that the AMA has not paid compensation to formally acquire the land.

However, in the heat of events, the Metro Education Department confirmed that it has no title holding but the site was acquired by AMA and recommended that AMA pay compensation to the family.

The family through its lawyers has written to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly following its attempt to develop the said parcel of land.

The Nanka Bruce family has given the AMA a period of one month to finalize any payment it has to do as regards the land acquisition and threatened to sue the AMA if it fails to do so.
