Wenchi Police Burns 100 Bags Of Wee

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command in the Brong Ahafo Region has destroyed 100 bags of Indian hemp it seized from 12 suspects.

The destruction of the quantities of Indian hemp took place at Nkosia land fill site in the municipality following an order by a Techiman Circuit Court presided over Daniel Obeng. The cannabis was impounded between 1998 and 2010.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwadwo Djan-Kyere, Wenchi Divisional Police Commander, some of the suspects had been prosecuted while others could not be traced.

The destruction exercise was witnessed by representatives from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Judiciary, Municipal Assembly and the Sanitation Unit of the Assembly. 

ACP Djan-Kyere regretted that Indian hemp smoking and peddling was very high among the youth at Banda-Ahenkro, Wenchi, Nsawkaw and other areas in Atebubu/Amantin and Sene East districts of the region.

He said the police had intensified patrol to arrest dealers of the drug, and warned that perpetrators would be prosecuted if arrested.

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has appealed to the general public to support the command in crime control.

ACP Djan-Kyere revealed that though crime had declined in the municipality, more ought to be done to protect lives and properties.

He disclosed that cases of murder reduced from three in 2013 to one in 2014, adding that armed robbery also decreased from four to one in the same period.

ACP Djan-Kyere said stealing was reduced from 174 to 128 while assault saw drastic reduction from 146 to 96, with unlawful damage declining from 34 to 14.

Threat of harm also decreased from 44 to 31 while unlawful conduct declined from 23 to 11, he said, and attributed the reduction to intensified police patrol in the municipality.
