An Accra Financial and Tax High Court yesterday reviewed upwards one of the bail conditions on the embattled former head of the Ghana Real Estate Developers’ Association (GREDA), Dr. Alexander Tweneboah.
The court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, increased the bail bond from GH¢50,000 to GH¢200,000 with two sureties.
This, according to the judge, had become necessary because the country had lost over GH¢900,000 as a result of the alleged crime.
It may be recalled that Dr. Tweneboah, after a long fight for freedom by his lawyers, was granted bail by an Accra magistrate court in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties, one to be justified.
As part of his bail conditions, the former GREDAboss was also expected to report to the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Mondays and Fridays.
The case was last week transferred to the High Court upon instructions of the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood.
Making his first appearance before the judge yesterday, the accused was ordered to report to the police as earlier stated in his bail condition.
A request by Fiifi Abban, lead counsel for Dr. Tweneboah, to relax the bail condition in favour of his client was not granted by the court.
The case has been adjourned until March 30, 2015.
Dr. Tweneboah was early this year arrested with nine others for allegedly engaging in illegal SIM box operations at various locations in Accra, Tema, Koforidua and Kumasi
He is facing a two-count charge of providing telecommunication services without licence and possessing of illegal telecommunication devices, an offence the accused has denied.
The suspects, including two foreign nationals, were nabbed by a joint Anti-Telecommunication Fraud taskforce in collaboration with the CID last month.
Meanwhile, information available to DAILY GUIDE indicates that the other accused persons arrested alongside Dr. Tweneboah are likely to be released.
They are Ebenezer Boateng, Victor Owusu, Kwadwo Asare, Emmanuel Kofi Essilfie, Edmond Essilfie, Kwaku Appiah, Alvin Habib, Francis Abbey and David Ayitsi.
