Appointing Oteng-Adjei As GNPC Board Chair Irresponsible..."The Prez Has Erred"!!! Kweku Baako

He may not have been officially confirmed as Chairman of the Board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), yet it appears some are highly critical of former Energy Minister, Dr Oteng-Adjei's latest appointment.

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, believes it is a very bad decision and must be revoked by President John Dramani Mahama if indeed it is true.

"If it is true, the president has erred; he should just withdraw…it is an error. His issue has not yet been settled. I am surprised; I doubt it. This is a bad decision," he said.

He was contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's flagship programme, "Kokrokoo" Wednesday.

Credible information available to peacefmonline.com indicates that the former Energy Minister, has just been named as the new Board Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). The position was then being occupied by Mr Ato Ahwoi.

A reliable source confirmed the news to Nana Kwadwo Asante, Editor of Peacefmonline. The source however added that the Energy Minister is yet to swear in Dr Oteng-Adjei as GNPC Board Chair.

The former Energy Minister was the subject of discussion a couple of weeks ago when news went viral he (Dr Oteng-Adjei) reportedly took home a luxury vehicle in his possession six months after he was fired from his position.

He initially denied the allegation saying the Lexus LX 570 was a reward for his hardwork, and explained that when he moved from the Energy Ministry to the Ministry of Environment and Science, “the financial situation in that ministry was a little bit difficult, compared to energy (ministry) so I worked out with the people in the energy ministry and kept the car so that we don’t have to go and spend another money to buy another car for me whilst this one was available to me. After all, it was the same government.”

But following the flak he received, Dr Oteng-Adjei returned the vehicle, which was one of 38 purchased by the Ministry of Energy at a cost of GH₵5,584,508 from a budget meant for extending electricity to 1,200 communities under the Multi-Donor Budgetary Support Programme between 2010 and 2012.

Hours after returning the Lexus LX 570, a former Deputy Energy Minister in the erstwhile Kuffuor administration, Hon K.T Hammond, further alleged Dr Oteng-Adjei is still keeping one more vehicle which belongs to the state.

“There is another car, it’s a saloon car belonging to GRIDCo [Ghana Grid Company Limited],” which he must return to the State immediately “so that we close the chapter,” KT Hammond claimed.

Meanwhile, it is unclear if a new board will be constituted or Oteng Adjei will lead the current board members.

The current board members include, Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation Alex Mould, Awulae Atibrukusu, Cadman Mills, Kweku Temeng, Alexandra Amoako Mensah and Kyeretwie Opoku.
