Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, Upper West Regional Minister, has bemoaned the growing irresponsibility among sections of society, warning it is a setback to national development.
He says the situation where everything, ranging from fixing of broken down boreholes, to the payment of school fees and medical bills is shifted on to politicians is the highest point of irresponsibility by the citizenry.
“Maybe we politicians are to blame for this creeping culture that is engulfing our society. We go about promising everything just to undo each other in a competition we call democracy when we know we cannot do it in most cases,” he lamented.
Alhaji Sulemani made the remarks during an inspection of some projects in some districts as part of the monitoring and evaluation exercise of the Regional Coordinating Council.
He inspected Community Senior High School projects under construction at Lambussie and Zini in the Lambussie-Karni and Sissala West Districts respectively, and a small town water system at the Piina Senior High School.
Alhaji Sulemani asked the people to rekindle the communal spirit exhibited by communities in the 1980s and early 1990s, and remarked that “ those days community members took responsibility of everything including facilities provided them by the government.”
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the work on the office complex of the Lambussie-Karni District Assembly, which started in 2009, and cautioned contractors working on government projects to complete work on schedule, to avoid increases in cost.
The District Chief Executive of Lambussie-Karni, Mr. Bom Kofi Dy-Yakah, who accompanied the minister, assured, he would monitor the projects, to ensure they are executed according to specifications.
