Parents Asked Not To Neglect Their Children With Disability

The Gomoa West District Co-ordinator of Special Education, Madam Maggita Ama Mill, has appealed to parents to invest in educating their children with special needs by equipping them with the tools that would enhance teaching and learning.

She said as parents the onus was on them to provide the needs of their children.

Madam Mill made the appeal at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Mephiboseth Training Centre, a school for the physical and mentally challenged children at Gomoa Ankamu near Apam.

She said the government knew the importance of educating children with special needs, hence the establishment of special schools and the current policy of inclusive education.

She commended the founder of the school for his immense contribution in establishing these schools to cater for children with special needs.

The Gomoa West District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, appealed to philanthropists, corporate bodies and well-to do citizens to complement the efforts of government and the Assembly to make these children achieve their dreams by donating tools and equipment necessary to empower them.

Prof Bannie Nakasuji from University of Southern California, who was Special Guest, promised to strengthen the relations of the University and the Centre for the benefit of the students.

The Director General of the Centre, Pastor Joseph Jehu-Appiah, in his Annual Report said the Centre started with eight children in 2005 now has student population of 57.

He said in order that the children did not feel segregated, they had started an integrated programme at the JHS level.

He said the Centre was finding it difficult to admit more children due to inadequate accommodation and salary for additional staff and a school bus.

Pastor Jehu-Appiah said parents did not pay school fees, adding the Centre is funded by philanthropists and therefore appealed to the government to come to their aid.

He thanked both foreign and local donors for their contribution to the school.
