UN Association Ghana, has no Office After 63 years

As the United Nations (UN) marks its 70th anniversary this year, the UN Association of Ghana (UNA – Gh), established in 1952 still has no office.

This was made known at the launch of the UN’s anniversary celebrations in Accra.

Mr Andy Kwabena Asamoah, a retired UN staff and President of the Ghana Association of Former International Civil Servants said UNA – Gh has faced weak support from the UN and the Ghana Government.

He therefore appealed to the UN and the Government of Ghana to provide the Association with an office accommodation.

He added that the Association was plagued with another “masquerading” Association calling itself the Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) even though by the directives of the UN, it was illegal for any country to have two UN associations.

“I think that the government of Ghana and the UN should ensure that this situation is rectified at the earliest possible time to avoid any embarrassment to the country and the UN,” Mr. Asamoah said.

Mr. Asamoah noted that the UN had been largely successful in its work – the League of Nations established after World War One, failed to prevent a second one whereas the p
ost-World War Two and UN era has not experienced global conflict.

Ms Nyame, UNA-Gh Secretary General, said the Association had the important role of bridging the gap between the UN and Ghanaians by educating people and creating awareness on the operations of the UN.

To that end, she said the Association had been sensitizing people on the post-2015 development goals and commemorating the UN days in secondary and tertiary educational institutions and other key locations across the country.

She observed that the Association marked the World Population Day, World Human Rights day, World AIDS day, World Environmental Day, World Suicide Prevention Day and also made some donations to the Pantang Mental Hospital and the Aviva Medical Centre in Takoradi.

The United Nations Anniversary celebrations, announced last year by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, would be climaxed on October 24 this year; the day on which the United Nations Charter entered into force.
