Two Remand Prisoners Escape From Cells

Two remand prisoners early Monday morning escaped from lawful custody from the Tepa District Police in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti Region. The escapees cut the reinforced iron bars at the back of the cell with hacksaw blades and escaped through the opening.

Police have since mounted a search for the two escapees, Ernest Owusu Affram, 26 and Shadrach Nyame, 39.

Confirming the incident to the Graphic online, the Ahafo Ano Divisional Commander of Police, Assistant Commission of Police (ACP) Mr. Kofi Dwumfuor Berchie, said the escape occurred between the hours of 1am and 2am.

According to him, preliminary investigations so far revealed that the prisoners did not use one day to execute their escape, he added that they had been cutting through the metal over time.

He said Affram who was arrested some six months ago for defrauding by false pretense, was being tried by the Tepa Circuit court and was expected at the court on Monday for the ruling on the case while Nyame was being held for stealing.

According to him, some people saw the two escaping from the cells and hinted the police.

However, Mr. Berchie said by the time the police got to the area, the two had run away.

Currently, he said the police have deployed men into the town in search of the escapees and appealed to the public to help arrest them.

This is the second time in less than a month that suspects in police cells have escaped from lawful custody.

On March 15, 2015, seven suspected criminals who were in lawful custody at the Denu police station for various offences runaway.

They were said to have overpowered the policemen on duty at the time. So far, four of them have been recaptured.
