Vincent Odotei Sowah Joins NPP Bandwagon

Obama is here!

No, not Barack, but the Ghanaian football version.

Vincent Sowah Odotei has announced his intention to contest for the hot seat that is Member of Parliament for the La-Dadekotopon constituency in Accra.

He'll be running for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Odotei, fondly called Obama, is a former CEO of Hearts of Oak and King Faisal.

"In Ghana football and politics are bedfellows. I admit that I was not able to modernize the game of football like I have dreamt of doing since I entered," he reflected in a chat with Joy Sports on Tuesday.

Odotei referred to his repeated attempts to get the Ghana Football Association congress to help him unseat the incumbent Kwesi Nyantakyi.

"But you can be sure that I will take that same spirit, endeavour and vision into politics to see if I can help my people in the La constituency."

Just as he tried to beat Nyantakyi for ten years and did not succeed, the businessman will meet an equally fierce opponent in his new pursuit - Nii Amasa Namoale (NDC)

Throw in the towel

This latest move by Odotei has brought understanding to his sudden announcement last week that he is not interested in contesting Kwesi Nyantakyi for the GFA elections slated for June.

"I have other things that I am doing which will not allow me to continue doing football. The time that I put aside to become FA president is past," he told Accra-based Happy FM last week.

"I have been the only person who has been bold to contest Nyantakyi twice. It comes to a point that you have to move on in life."

Odotei's political activism is not new, having been president of the La Youth Association and a card bearing member of the NPP for years.

'Declaration week'

It has been a week of similar declarations, as Odotei Sowah follows former Joy FM broadcaster Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, lawyer Egbert Faibille Jnr and Marketing Consultant George Andah in joining forces with the country's largest opposition party ahead of the 2016 elections.
