A 38-year-old man, accused of terrorising students of the University of Ghana, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.
Richard Agordo, unemployed and an ex-convict, is said to be a member of a gang alleged to have been attacking students on the Legon-TF hostel road.
Agordo was arrested on March 22, 2015 for allegedly attacking two students of the University of Ghana while they were returning from a group discussion about 10p.m. on March 18, 2015.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and causing harm and the court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, convicted him on his own plea.
Facts of the case Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu told the court that students of the university had been regular victims of robbery attacks by the gang in recent times.
He told the court that on January 1, 2015, Agordo and the leader of the gang, Atta Kofi Kyei, attacked and robbed a student identified only as Rosina.
Luck, however, eluded Atta Kyei who was arrested but Agordo escaped.
Atta Kyei alias Fresh Boy, 18, has been convicted and is currently serving a 20-year term in prison with hard labour.
Chief Inspector Adu said Agordo continued operating with another accomplice, identified only as Bright, who is currently on the run.
On March 18, 2015, he said, Agordo and his accomplice attacked the two students at gun point and ordered them to surrender their valuables, which they obliged.
Chief Inspector Adu said the accused shot one of his victims in the thigh in the course of the attack.
The handbag of one of the victims, which was snatched, contained laptops, phones, a Ghanaian passport, lecture notes and Gh¢6,467 cash.
Two students attacked He said on March 21, 2015, Agordo and Bright succeeded in robbing another student of Mount Crest University on the same University of Ghana campus.
According to him, they bolted into a nearby bush after attacking the student and made away with his laptop and other valuables.
Agordo was arrested the next day by the police when he attempted to sell the stolen items.
Chief inspector Adu said the convict led the police to a bush near a sub-station at Legon, where a bag containing items allegedly stollen from the complainants.
When the police later searched his room, the prosecution said, other items belonging to the complainants and some other victims were found.
Chief Inspector Adu said the convict admitted the offence in his caution statement.
