Chief Destroys Neighbours Property

The Chief of Adweso near Koforidua, Nana Pinpong, has been fined 100 penalty units or in default six months with hard labour in prison for destroying the property of his neighbour.

Nana Pinpong, who destroyed five pieces of his neighbour’s blocks, is to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for one year or in default six months with hard labour in prison.

He was, however, acquitted and discharged on a second charge of threat to harm.

A Koforidua Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Ebenezer Osei-Darko, described the chief’s behaviour as reprehensible and that in view of his status as a traditional ruler he could not take the law into his own hands and behave the way he did.

The chief was also advised to endeavour to always exercise decorum in his dealings with his subjects.

According to the facts of the case as presented by the prosecution, the complainant, Mr Samuel Oppong-Boadi, a lecturer at the All Nations University College, and the chief share a common boundary.

The prosecution said on May 28, 2014 at about 4:45 p.m., Mr Oppong-Boadi sent a KIA truck loaded with cement blocks to his house for an ongoing project.

It said the driver parked the truck by the road side and offloaded the blocks and parked them just by the entrance to the house of the lecturer.

According to the prosecution, the chief intentionally destroyed five pieces of the blocks, amid insults and further deflated the tyres of the truck.

Nana Pinpong, the prosecution stated, also threatened the complainant that he would organise people to beat him up in the presence of witnesses.
