Commotion @ BOST: Senior Staff, Mgt Trade Blows! Over Recruitment

Information reaching The New Crusading GUIDE indicates that the Senior Staff Association of the Bulk Oil Storage & Transportation Limited (BOST) is up in arms against the management of the company over recruitment of workers.

The senior staff members blame the management for violating the company’s policies on recruitment.

Addressing this in a petition addressed to the board members of the company, and intercepted by this paper, the staff condemned the recruitment exercise and urged the board members to immediately revoke all new appointments that have been done illegally.

According to the petition, there is a deliberate violation of the labour law by the company with regard to temporary staffs who have been under contract for more than three years, although their department heads had appraised and evaluated their jobs and recommended them to be confirmed as permanent staff.

“They still have not been confirmed. If there is a need for employment it is fair and equitable that these be considered first before looking outside because they have learned on the job and had contributed their quota to the company” it noted.

Again, the angry senior staff members accuse management of what they describe as closed – door recruitment of new staff without regard for the ongoing restructuring process which had caused fear and panic among some members.

The senior staff noted that while existing workers have been asked to reapply for their jobs, new staffs are being employed every now and then. To buttress this point they said is contrary to laid down recruitment procedures.

The worried workers punched the management for indiscriminate transfers, threats of transfers and dismissal. A clear example was the case of the company’s treasury officer who had worked with the company for the past nine years was dismissed based on no reason.

The strongly worded petition asserted that “there is disconnect between management and the Managing Director, this due to the fact that management meetings have not been held for over nine months. This does not foster good corporate governance practices, growth and sustainability. It is a common place to see clearly that there is no leadership and that nobody seems to be in charge when the Managing Director is absent or has travelled. Management members have been side – lined virtually in the day to day management and administration of the company”.

The senior staff has given the board members one week ultimatum to ensure sanity and smooth operations of the company.
