The police have mounted a search for five men who assaulted Kwame Fosu, a resident of Sankore in the Asunafo South District in the Brong Ahafo Region last Monday.
They were said to have inflicted machete wounds on Fosu, who was walking with her sister to the centre of the town at about 9.00 a.m. that day.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Christopher Tawiah, who briefed the Daily Graphic in a telephone interview, gave the names of the suspects as Kofi Amponsah, Kwaku Richmond and Nana Osei and two others whose names were given only as Azumah and Figo.
He, however, refuted media reports that the incident was a clash between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said currently, there were 12 policemen and four soldiers in the town to maintain security, adding “the town is quiet with the people going about with their normal businesses”.
According to Mr Tawiah, the victim, who sustained multiple wounds on his left cheek, head and arms, was treated and discharged at the Star of Light Hospital at Kukuom last Tuesday.
Confrontations Throwing light on the incident, Mr Tawiah said Fosu told the police that he was walking to the town with his sister when suddenly he saw a group of young men coming towards their direction.
He said one of the young men confronted him and questioned him whether he was the only man in the town, after which he was joined by the others who were armed with machetes and clubs to assault him.
Mr Tawiah, who was speaking from Sankore, said the town was notorious for clashes among the youth. He, however, did not assign the reasons for the assault.
He pleaded with the general public to assist the police to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice to forestall such incidents in future.
