Two Denu Fugitives Plead Guilty

Two of the five suspects who allegedly escaped from police cells at Denu in the Ketu South District in the Volta Region last Wednesday changed their pleas of not guilty to guilty.

Kwame Azasu and Linus Ashietey had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to escape lawful custody and escaping lawful custody but pleaded guilty when they appeared before the court yesterday.

However, the remaining three did not change their pleas. They are Edem Gomala, Stanley Wada Kabee and George Dabla.

Consequently, the court, presided over by Mr Justice Ali Baba Abature, adjourned sitting to tomorrow to enable the prosecution to summon witnesses.

The five suspects were put before the Aflao Circuit Court on April 15, this year, accused of escaping from police cells and bolting with two AK47 assault rifles and 50 rounds of ammunition.

The police have so far retrieved 13 rounds of ammunition and the two assault rifles. The remaining 37 rounds of ammunition are yet to be retrieved, while two of the suspects who are said to be Nigerians are yet to be re-arrested.

They are  Albert Asadu and Tobechuckwu Obina.

Facts
Presenting the facts at the court, Sergeant Michael Akimo of the Aflao Police said the five suspects were among 13 others who were detained in police custody to stand trial for cases of robbery.

He said on March 13, this year, they escaped from the cells and broke into the armoury, together with two Nigerians, and bolted with the two AK 47 assault rifles and 50 rounds of ammunition.

He said the police mounted a search for them and arrested three of them at Lotakor Village, near Agbozume, one in the Republic of Togo and the other at a hideout in Denu.

Two AK 47 rifles retrieved
Sgt Akimo said after the arrest of the three fugitives and others, the two AK 47 assault rifles had been retrieved but without the magazine of one of the guns.
