Head of Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Amoako Baah sees everything wrong with the Constitution of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, it is not proper as the elected Flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo who is also the leader of the party cannot hold meetings unless it comes from the National Chairman.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Dr. Amoako Baah said NPP’s constitution should rather have been drafted in a manner that once the party picks a flag-bearer, he becomes the leader of the party who can call for any meeting in the party.

“…but the problem with the NPP is with the party's constitution, I don’t think they wrote it well because the situation where someone has won the flagbearership and it happens that some of the party’s executives are not in good terms with him, what can this person do? That is the problem and so the constitution must be written in such a way that, once they pick a flagbearer he becomes a leader of the party who can call for any meeting in the party,” he asserted.

“….as it stands in NPP, this is why there is tension in the party. For now if Nana Akufo-Addo decides to call for a meeting, you will hear what people will say about him; they will say he is taking over the work of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong,” he added.

He however consented to the fact that faction is normal in political parties but he asserted there is a seeming situation in NPP that suggests that there are some executives who have parted ways with the Flagbearer and this has made him redundant as a leader who cannot operate without them.

“I heard last week that they wanted to hold National Executive meeting but it didn’t come on because it is the mandate of the chairman to call for a meeting and not the flagbearer who is the leader of the party. And so if the chairman decides not to call for a meeting, what are you going to do?...what they have failed to realize is that Nana Akufo-Addo is the Flagbearer but he does not control the party because the party has his own executives," he stated.
